Is your website ready for the ADA deadline?

No technical skills needed. Open your homepage and a recent meeting agenda, then work through the list. Every "no" is worth fixing before your deadline.

The 10-item checklist

Short on time? Skip to the free report

  1. Free automated scan

Paste your homepage address into the free WAVE checker at wave.webaim.org. Red icons are errors: missing image text, low contrast, unlabeled fields.

  2. Text contrast

Look for light gray text on white, or text over photos. If it's hard to read on a phone outdoors, it likely fails contrast.

  3. Agenda PDFs

Open your newest agenda or minutes PDF and try to highlight a sentence. If you can't, it's a scanned image screen readers can't read.

  4. Forms

Open a contact or request form. Does every field keep a visible label while you type, and do errors say how to fix them?

  5. Flyers and graphics

When an event flyer or map is posted as an image, are the key details (what, when, where) also written out as text?

  6. Link wording

Scan for links that only say "click here" or "read more." Each link should make clear where it goes.

  7. Keyboard only

Put the mouse aside and press Tab from the top of your homepage. Can you reach every link and button, and always see where you are?

  8. Outside vendors

Payment portals, agenda systems and forms you link to count as well. Has each vendor told you in writing that it meets WCAG 2.1 AA?

  9. Meeting video captions

Play a recorded meeting. Can you turn on captions, and are they accurate rather than raw auto-captions full of errors?

  10. An accessibility page

Is there a page telling residents how to report a barrier or ask for a document in another format, and who responds?

A quick screen, not a full audit. A site can pass every item here and still have barriers, but a "no" on any item usually means work to do.
